The thought of buying an RV can be exciting, but also a bit overwhelming if it’s your first time. There are hundreds of options from fifth wheels to diesel pushers, travel trailers, Class A, Class B and Class C RVs and pop-up campers. There are also all sorts of amenities that can be purchased with an RV. The following is meant to be a starting point for figuring out what you want so when you head to your local RV Dealer you will seem cool, comfortable and confident.
New or Used. This is the first question you should ask yourself. There are benefits to both. With a new RV or motor home, you will pay more, but you will also be covered by warranty if anything goes wrong. As well, you will be confident knowing the driving history of the vehicle. You can also have your say in how the vehicle is decorated and what additional accessories you want.
If you decide to purchase a used vehicle then you will save quite a bit of money off the original price. You can also get a warranty with a used vehicle, however it is not usually as comprehensive as if you were to buy a new RV or motorhome. If you do buy a used vehicle be sure to purchase it from a trusted source such as a consignment dealer. Ask around about the reputation of the place and have the vehicle checked by your preferred mechanic.
Size does matter. It’s not important whether you buy a Class A RV, which is about as big as they come, or a pop-up camper. What’s important is that you purchase a vehicle that is the right size for your needs. If you have a family and know you will be traveling with a more than four people, you might want to look into a Class A or Class C RV. Class B RVs tend to be better suited for couples. Pop-up campers work for smaller and larger groups, but there are fewer amenities than with a Class A RV. Be sure you have enough room for your needs, but you don’t have to go overboard and purchase a vehicle that is going to be overwhelming to maintain.
Test drive vehicles from different manufacturers. The way something looks on paper is completely different than how it may feel or drive in person. It’s important whether you are buying a new or used RV to try out several different models from different manufacturers to see how they feel to you. The most important thing is that you are comfortable with your purchase.
Amenities. You can deck out your new RV with as many or as few features as you like. Some popular amenities include side awning, window awnings, solar panels, washing machines, upgraded entertainment systems and more. Think about your priorities, how often you will use the vehicle and where you are most likely to be. If you will be doing a lot of self-contained camping where there are no electrical outlets to plug into, then you may not want a washing machine, which can take up extra space.
If you are doing a lot of self-contained camping, then solar panels may be a great addition to you purchase, as they will help keep things running. Awnings offer shade, so this is great if you do a lot of camping beachside or in warmer climates where there aren’t a lot of trees to provide shade.
No matter what type of vehicle you decide to go with, make sure you are happy with it. Give yourself options when you walk into an RV dealer or Consignment dealer. Look around, try things out and figure out what is going to work best for you.
