Cooking While Boondocking In Your Class C Motorhome

One thing is for certain: even when you’re camping, you need to eat. Cooking is relatively simple in the confines of an RV campground or park. What do you do about it, though, when you are boondocking? It can be a fun challenge, or a dismal failure depending on your attitude, and your camping shrewdness.

What kind of meals work best when boondocking?

Serious boondockers know they need to conserve on resources. This includes food and water as well. “One pot” meals can be hearty, and satisfying. If you want to save on washing dishes (and who doesn’t?) a meal prepared completely on the grill is delicious and simple. With items that need to be washed, you can save water by wiping them out with recycled paper towels before you wash and store them in your motorhome class c.

Foil cooking is amazing

Foil cooking is another winner for boondockers with even less cleanup for the cook. Food wrapped in foil can be cooked on the grill, or in hot coals. You might wrap some meat, potatoes, and cheese together, and have some fresh vegetables in a separate package. Keep some cans of spray oil to use on the foil to prevent sticking. If you like, you can precook meat before you leave on your trip.

Planning your meals ahead is important

With no grocery store around the corner, you need to plan your meals out carefully. A good camping cookbook will be helpful. The Boy Scouts have a camping cookbook, and you can find camping recipes online. Bring along items for snacking – perhaps some homemade granola, cookies, peanuts, energy bars, canned goods, and fresh fruit. Store them in your travel trailer. Keep it simple even if you have to use prepared foods. You can save time while on the road by jumpstarting some things at home.

Bring only the necessary cooking equipment

Remember to bring extra fuel cylinders if you are using a camping grill. When you’re camping in the wilderness you can’t easily run out and get them. Recycled paper plates and cups will help conserve water since they do not need to be washed.

You will need a minimum number of pots, pans, and utensils for cooking. Make sure you have at least one can opener. There are other ways of opening cans, but they aren’t pretty. A plastic dishpan will come in handy for washing up, and for storing things.

Remember: when you’re ready to go home, leave as little evidence of your presence as possible.
