Motorhome Types – Elevating Roof Panel Van

Motorhomes come in all shapes and sizes, delivered to the marketplace by  many manufacturers in many countries. These vehicles however are generally categorised  as either a panel van (vehicles that use the original body of the van) or a coach built (using a purpose built habitation area, mounted on a suitable chassis).
The Dismountable (also known as Demountable) concept is quite simple – it’s a purpose made habitation compartment that is designed to be mounted piggy back style onto a pick up truck and can be detached when required. The unit is generally designed to be detached from the pick up truck when it is being lived in. The use of the truck is really only to transport the living capsule from one location to another. Some experts would argue that the Dismountable is more a caravan than a motorhome. These are particularly common in America, where pick up vehicles are popular. Crew cab pick ups, which have two rows of seats are very suitable as base vehicles.
The advantages of the Dismountable over other forms of motorhomes are numerous. The ability to detach and park the living accommodation releases the base vehicle for independant use. This is unique in motorhomes – hence the caravan comparison. The living space can be surprisingly large, well organized and usually has the overcab bed layout. Most models will allow a canvas sided exrension bedroom, that fits snugly under the overcab bed. Think of this as an external tent room. Most models have generous external storage space under the area that fits on the back tray of the pick up. Whilst this area is open (i.e. unlocked), it is usually a large space and covered, ideal for bikes, kayaks and the like.
There are however some critical drawbacks to the Dismointable design as the theory doesn’t also lead to sound practice.
