When you own a truck, fifth wheel travel trailers make perfect sense. Since they attach to a hitch in the bed of the truck, you can’t own a fifth wheel if you don’t own a truck. They are the only type of RV that has such a requirement. However, if you do own a truck, then it only makes sense to at least look into getting a fifth wheel.
Bumper Pull vs. Fifth Wheel
Bumper pulls are exactly what they say they are. They are travel trailers that are pulled by the bumper. This means if your car, SUV, or truck is strong enough, then you can attach it to your bumper and go.
However, fifth wheel trailers do not work that way. They either attach to your truck bed via gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch. The location of the hitch makes all the difference in the world, too. Since it is located in the bed of the truck, there is no way the trailer can get leverage on the truck. This makes pulling the trailer in a side-wind safer.
Better Hitch Means More Room
The most noticeable aspect of the fifth wheel is the size. Since the trailer attaches to the bed of the truck, it can be heavier and most of the time, heavier means bigger. Bigger trailers mean more room for you. It can be more living space, an extra bed, a larger kitchen or even a washer/dryer area. In this case, bigger is better.
The Only Downside: Cost
With all the extra features and extra room, you have to know it costs more. Like all RVs, the bigger it is the more it will cost. 5th wheel trailers are no different. In order to get all the extra room and extra luxury of a fifth wheel, you will have to pay a higher price.
On the brighter side, you can get anything you want in a 5th wheel. Basically, if you can find the amenity in a Class A motor home, then you can find it in a fifth wheel.
Really, it all comes down to options. When you own a ¾ ton or bigger truck already, you have more options. More options means you get to choose from a wide variety of floor plans, which, in turn, means you get to choose the style that is best for you.
