Understanding Your RV Batteries: The Difference Between Regular and Deep Cycle Batteries

If you’re new to recreational vehicle ownership, it helps to understand a bit about how RV batteries work. Some basic knowledge will help you keep a steady supply of power to your vehicle. It will also ensure that you don’t overcharge and that your costly investment will last for years.
The first thing to realize is that there are three types of vehicle batteries: lead-acid (standard/conventional), gel and AGM (“absorbed glass mat”). This is true whether you’re talking about a recreational vehicle or a car/truck.
Lead acid (frequently referred to as “conventional”) are the most common and least expensive. They are filled with lead and sulfuric acid, as the name indicates. This kind of battery must be handled with great care, since the acid is toxic. The acid of gel batteries is contained in “gel.” That’s why they’re referred to as “gel” batteries.
AGM’s contain no liquid acid. Rather, the acid is contained in glass particles. AGM’s are safer and less toxic, but more costly.
What is the difference between ordinary and “deep cycles”? Regular RV batteries are similar in construction to deep cycle RV batteries. They differ slightly in design, though, in order to serve different functions.

A standard battery is comparable to the type used in a car or truck when it comes to function. They are produced in such a way that they are able to provide a large amount of current for a short period of time.
The fast and powerful burst of current they are capable of generating is what makes it possible for you to start your vehicle from a cold, standing position. They also make it possible for you to drive whatever distance you need to, whether across town or across the country.
Deep cycle RV batteries, on the other hand, cannot start and run your vehicle. Deep cycles are meant to provide a very small burst of power and sustain it over an extended period of time.
These types are sometimes referred to as “house batteries.” They are meant for powering the living part of the vehicle: the appliances used on board for day-to-day living.
The length of time that they can supply power depends upon the number and types of appliances you’re running. It also depends on the type of battery you have. The power they’re capable of generating and sustaining is referred to in “amp hours.”
Amp hours can be defined as one amp drawn for one hour. Typical RV batteries come in a range of amp hours between 33 and 200. The more amp hours one provides, the more costly the battery will be.
Other vehicles that use deep cycle batteries include boats, golf carts and forklifts. In fact, the golf cart type can be used in place of RV batteries, though some professionals advise against this.
Deep cycle RV batteries (unlike regular ones) must be charged periodically. They should never be run completely dry before re-charging. In fact, they should be recharged before they hit 20 percent power.
Deep cycle RV batteries cannot be charged with a motorcycle battery charger or other type not made for a recreational vehicle battery. Instead, they should be charged with a type that is made specifically for RV batteries, as well as the style of battery (conventional, gel or AGM). Using the wrong type will damage your battery. Overcharging (which may be tempting) will also ruin your battery very quickly.
