Your Class C Motorhome Is A Target For Criminals

Travelers in the Middle East in ancient times moved in groups by camel caravan. Roving across the desert alone was an invitation to robbers, and murderers. Your Class C motorhome is likewise a potential target for criminals. Here are ways you can discourage them.

Lock it well

Dampen a thief’s enthusiasm by securely locking your Class C RV. A locked vehicle foils a quick getaway – a fundamental necessity if you are stealing. Lock everything including windows and outdoor storage compartments. Lock up your valuables while you are away from your motorhome Class A. Use a steering wheel lock to deter burglars.

When you go out, stow valuables where they cannot be seen. The best hiding place doesn’t look like one. Fashion one to look like something in your vehicle, and make it as impenetrable as possible. Never walk away from your unsecured diesel RV, even if you are “coming right back.” It can happen that fast.

Attach your flat screen TV securely to the wall so no one can walk away with it.

Take the keys out of the “toad” and lock it, too. Check it when you get back to make sure someone has not loosened it from the tow bar. It may start to disconnect from your Class B RV on the highway where the thief will attack when you pull off the road.

Use sight and sounds

Alarms designed for vehicles are a good deterrent. Use the window sticker that comes with it to issue a warning. Another possibility is to install an alarm like the one you have for your home. At the least, you can rig up a blinking red light to make it appear as if you have one. If you have a tracking device on your engine, you may not want to advertise that.

Be wise about where you stop and whom you allow in

Never let down your guard at rest areas. They are a thief’s favorite hunting ground. Never stop in one for an overnight. Service stations and truck stops can be chancy as well. If you plan to overnight in a Wal-Mart parking lot, park your small travel trailers in a well-lighted area with the door facing toward the store where it will be highly visible.

No matter how kindly and friendly strangers may seem, common sense dictates that you never welcome them in to your diesel pusher. Criminals will use that as an opportunity to case your motorhome.
